The Wells of Power

Great geysers of magic that spring forth from the very essence of the world, pure magic flows like water out of these springs into a sizable series of wells. Lying just a mile or so south from the Obsidian Tower, they are constantly being studied by their scholars and guarded by their knights. Not much is known about how they formed, but what is well documented is their effect on humans and beasts. The Wells are renowned to have a strange effect on the living. If a live creature is plunged into the serene pools of raw physically manifested magic, they have a 1/1000 chance of living through the experience. Those that survive the process come out changed. They are capable of channeling intense physical magic, but mutate slightly, often losing all their hair, and their eyes becoming a milky white.

The Obsidian Tower

The Obsidian Tower was founded when six of Farneas' preeminent scholars, mages, and archaeologists discovered the Wells of Power while looking for artifacts of the civilization of the Ancient Men. They stumbled upon the wells, physical pools of raw magic, deep in an underground cavern thought to be a ritual site of the Ancient Men. These six scholars entered the well and exited it as more than they were. When they returned to their king and explained what had happened, King Lalehr was at unease by. He suggested the six take residence in a tower, later known as the Obsidian Tower, which would be built for them as a sanctuary to study the effects of the well. The six being true patriots learned that their newfound powers held truly ruinous potential and suggested to their king a countermeasure against such magic. They all understood that the location of the well could not possibly be hidden for long, so Tarsus Rakell VI commissioned the creation of the Horsemen. The six worked closely with a class of young squires to train them in martial combat to suppress a sorcerers magic. In time, Rakell VI aged and his mind withered. Eventually he went mad and feared attack from some unknown evil. He ordered every one of his subjects be rounded up and marched to the nearest Well of Power, to plunge themselves into the depths of its magic. The loss of life made the Well turn red with blood. It began to run wild and unleash deadly beasts upon the land. Rakell VI died in his sleep as his will was carried out.
