Armor and Shields

Mundane armor can be enchanted by a mage with the required amount of coin, provided you can pay. Most if not all of these armors can be made of special Materials.

Armor Slots

Armor slots allow any armor to be fitted with Ouranite. For each slot the armor has, the amount of Ouranite the weapon may hold is increased by one, up to a maximum of two. Each slot that is added to the armor increases its base gold value by 100gp. Natural armor cannot be fitted with Ouranite. Incorporating this property during the smithing process, or retrofitting an armor requires hiring a specialized Blacksmith, and costs 200gp per slot.

Light Armor

Light Armor is typically made from cloth and leather and is widely available. It’s good for adventurers who are looking for more mobility or stealth than heavier armors can provide and good for city watches for its lesser cost and the ease of refitting it for a new wearer.

Heavy Robe.
Heavy robes are robes stuffed with thick batting. Geared more towards sorcerers and spellcasters who think they may be finding themselves in combat situations but are still looking for ease of movement.

Leather Lamellar.
This armor is made from thick inflexible hardened leather plates riveted onto a more flexible leather undergarment. It grants more comprehensive coverage than standard studded leather, but is more difficult to move in.

Medium Armor

While offering more protection than light armor, medium armor is somewhat more uncommon and harder to come by throughout the continent. Well-equipped adventurers generally prefer medium armor over heavier varieties for its reduced weight and greater stealth capabilities.

Dragon Hide.
Adventures far and wide seek to slay dragons for fame, fortune, and glory. More still seek to secure armor made from their hides for simple protection. Depending on the type of dragon hide harvested, armor made of this material grants resistance to a specific element, found in the adjoining table.

Dō-maru.
Mostly seen and worn in Qokon, the Dō-maru is a skirted armor worn by adventurers and warriors alike. Made mostly of iron and hardened leather slats over a supple cloth or leather shirt, the lacquering applied after construction can give this armors appearance lots of customizability based on the wearers’ preferences or allegiances.

Reinforced Leather.
Reinforced leather is standard studded leather armor with plates of iron, steel, or ironwood reinforcing the most vital areas. This style of armor is often seen in armies where a soldier wants to add more protection to his vital areas than would be issued by his noble hour or city garrison would supply.

Heavy Armor

Heavy armor offers the best protection money can provide, and is usually only seen on successful adventurers, and wealthy nobles who want to show off. The great defense provided by heavy armor is offset by its weight, and the limited mobility it provides.

Reinforced Plate.
Essentially normal plate armor that has been reinforced through the addition of bluesteel struts to the inner or outer structure, typically in areas that are prone to large heavy strikes. Bluesteel is used, despite the added expense, due to its lighter weight compared to other metals.

Sinew Plate.
Typically only made on commission due to their cost and complexity, sinew plate is constructed of plate mail with each individual component connected by magically activated cables or ribbons of steel that act to augment the abilities of the wearer. Each set of sinew plate is as unique as its crafter and commissioner and are often regarded as functional art. Sinew plate allows the wearer to lift objects many times heavier than they normally would be able to. While wearing this armor, treat your lifting and carrying capacity as if you were one size category larger.

Shields

Buckler.
Buckler shields are small enough to be mounted directly onto the forearm, allowing use of two-handed weapons while still providing a small increase to defense. They also do not need to be dropped from your off hand to reach into bags and satchels to retrieve items.

Tower Shield.
Tower shields are massive slabs of steel used often when portable mobile protection is required. A tower shield requires a dedicated hand, but when you plant it in the ground, as a bonus action, between yourself and a ranged enemy for 1 round, it provides half-cover for one medium creature (the wielder) until it is moved. Small creatures have disadvantage while carrying a tower shield due to their size and bulk.

Ion Shield Ion shields are bracers when inactive, and produce a shimmering blue field of hard light, about the size of a buckler, when activated as a bonus action. Ion shields

Exotic Armor Materials

Several exotic materials are available in Alaraes that are conducive to armor crafting. Typically rarer than steel or simple leather, an exotic material may provide you with a much-needed edge in combat, and some noteworthy status in social circles. Armor made from exotic materials is always more expensive than run of the mill protection, and the bonus it provides to armor class may be affected as well. Use the table below to determine AC value and the cost of an armor made from exotic materials.

Blazewood.
Blazewood is harvested from the Devils Beard, a great forest in Rosogath. The oldest of these trees have absorbed enormous amounts of lava mana from Mt. Fireforge, imbuing them with a natural resistance to all but the absolute hottest of magical flames, and a hardness similar to hardened leather or lamellar. Blazewood is often used to replace the hardened leather plates used in armor, but is generally considered an impractical replacement for entirely metal armor due to its cost and limited availability. Are made of blazewood grants resistance to fire damage.

Bluesteel
Mined deep within the Kaldarian Sha’ak Sha Mountains, bluesteel is a mildly magical metal that is lighter, and more durable than other forms of steel. Due to the advantages that this type of armor could provide nations Kaldar is on less than the best terms with, its export is tightly controlled by Bordan, where it is refined. When armor is made entirely from bluesteel it removes the stealth disadvantage and strength requirements for that set of armor. In addition the armor shimmers slightly with a dim light out to 10 feet. This effect is not magical.

Ironwood.
Ironwood trees grow in thickets throughout the entirety of Alaraes, and are often sought after by druids and shamans seeking greater degrees of protection but wish to eschew traditional metal armor. Ironwood armor also has the added benefit of being slightly lighter than their all metal counterparts.

Redsteel.
Redsteel armor is refined from a semi-volatile but highly magically active ore vein near the Obsidian Tower. Typically worn by mage-hunters and Knights of the Obsidian Tower due to the magical resistance it provides, a fair few adventurers have paid grand sums for the privilege to have personal sets of armor crafted from this material. Armor made from this specialized material reduces damage dealt by spells by half, after resistances and immunities are applied.
